HALFF are currently working with Devon Young Carers to provide a series of fortnightly cooking sessions for young carers in Axminster. There are currently 76 children in Axminster registered as young carers. The responsibilities of caring for a member of the family who is likely have a disability, illness, mental health condition or issues with drugs or alcohol dependency can mean that young carers often miss out on opportunities that other children have, both educationally and socially.
Our hands on sessions help to build up essential cooking and life skills, as well as providing some fun respite from responsibilities at home. As well as preparing a meal to take away for themselves and their family, all participants are given recipe sheets, along with nutritional information, so that they can use their new skills at home.
This project is funded by the Big Lottery Funds People Project until July 2018
